Workshop: Traditional East African cooking lessons
Whether in your company, at your private birthday party, at team-building events or even in your school, there is always an exuberant enthusiasm for cooking!
You will prepare traditional dishes from some East African countries and get to know typical specialities from the region.
The menu includes, for example, matoke, binyebwa from Uganda, sweet potatos/Viazi vitamu and muhogo/maniok from East Africa and sukuma wiki from Kenya, ugali/sembe/fufu/pap which is a dish loved by various countries in Africa.
The workshops are held in a lively, relaxed and quiet atmosphere.
So be ready to fully participate and enjoy this once-in-a-life time experience!

What makes this course so special?

- The names, origin and use of the spices will be explained
- Then we get to work on a sumptuous East African buffet

- You wear a special textile, just as it is worn in East African kitchens
- You will be given a short presentation on how a piece of cloth is used for communication
- To make you feel like you are in Africa, we will cook and eat together in an African atmosphere, of course with our favourite African music.
- The meal will be accompanied by red and white wine from South Africa.
- Afterwards we will enjoy Kenyan tea and coffee
- After your cooking safari, you will receive a surprise gift that will always remind you of the cooking workshop
- You will take the original recipes and the remaining food home with you
- You will receive a list of shops in Basel where the ingredients are available
- You shall take the remaining food home with you for your family to taste as well

I love cooking and would like to show you what African cuisine has to offer.
I got my cooking skills from my mum, who firmly believed that all her children - including my brothers - should learn to cook well.
I remember, as if it were yesterday, my brother Peter cooking vegetables (sukuma wiki) without washing them first!
‘Maggots are healthy and contain a lot of protein,’ was his explanation. Some of us laughed it off but honestly the rest of the family was horrified:
‘Yucky!’ That's why we always watched him closely when it was his turn to cook to make sure the vegetable was washed. We still laugh about it today.
